Generic drugs are becoming more and more popular as the years go by. Some people may consider them to be less effective than the ones they are “copying” but this perception could not be any further away from the truth. A great number of documented cases of success are the only proof required to validate their efficiency.
In this article we are going to present the generic drugs of Viagra, a very popular medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction, among other conditions that men suffer from. But first, it would be very useful to accurately define what a generic drug is.
A drug has to meet a list of requirements before it is allowed to acquire the “generic” title. They go through a series of tests including some that measure their overall performance, quality, indented use and many other characteristics. Even though, in some cases, generic drugs are identical to the ones they are “copying”, their price is always lower mainly due to marketing reasons.
Every drug company that plans to start selling a generic drug must submit an application named ANDA (Abbreviated New Drug Application) in order to get an official license for it. But that is not the end of the procedure. The most important stage is the approval by the FDA, the Food & Drug Administration.
According to the rules set by the FDA, a generic drug must have the following properties in order for it to be allowed to be offered for commercial use:
Offer the same results to the tests concerning quality, strength, purity, dosage form and administration.
Be bioequivalent. This term is used in pharmacology to describe the chart results that derive from the studies during which the drug is given to volunteers and its effects are monitored. Bioequivalence is achieved when the aforementioned results are almost identical to the ones of the innovator drug.
The active ingredients contain in the generic drug are the same as the ones found in the innovator drug.
Following is a list of the various generic Viagra drugs and some information about each one of them:
Tadacip: A drug produced by the world famous Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla Ltd. It contains tadalafil, a well known PDE5 inhibitor. Even though, when compared to Viagra and other generic drugs, Tadacip is new on the market, its very high efficiency levels have allowed it to become very popular really fast.
Penegra: Another generic drug manufactured in India, this time by Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd., a company known for its ground breaking advancements in the pharmaceutical industry. According to consumers’ preferences, Penegra is the most popular medicine after Viagra. It uses a different and more common PDE5 inhibitor than Tadacip, called Sildenafil Citrate.
Silagra: Silagra is also manufactured in India by Cipla Ltd. Besides having this common with Tadacip, it also has a common characteristic with Penegra since it uses the same PDE5 inhibitor, Sildenafil. It has accumulated a huge number of positive reviews over the years, launching it to the top spots in its category.
The side effects of all of the above drugs are, essentially, the same. The most common ones among them are nasal congestion, flushing, difficulties in digestion, headaches and skin rash marks. There have also been times when some of the patients developed photophobia or blurred vision. Some other side effects classified as very rare are sudden changes in blood pressure, arrhythmia, sudden hearing loss and even heart attack or stroke. If any of the rare side effects occur, the patient must seek immediate medical help, preferably in a hospital.
The contraindications are very few and specific. Men who have recently suffered a stroke or a heart attack, men with very low blood pressure and men with insufficient kidneys or liver function are not allowed to use Viagra or any of its generic products.
The above presentation is an undeniable proof of the progress medicine has achieved in the past decades. Medical conditions and diseases that used to be impossible to cure or even treat now have a wide variety of drugs that can be used against them effectively and in a significantly lower cost. Our medical arsenal keeps expanding as the years go by, offering many different choices to people that may not be able to use a specific brand due to various reasons, for example an allergy.
